Brinsworth House

Brinsworth House, is a 40-bedroom residential and nursing care home, run by the Royal Variety charity, which provides round-the-clock care to elderly members of the entertainment profession. Built in 1850, the grade II listed building is located on the outskirts of Twickenham, proud of its theatrical lineage, the interior is decorated throughout to keep this ethos alive.

In 1912, aided by a Royal Command Performance attended by King George V and Queen Mary extension works were carried out to the house. Subsequently, the Royal Variety Performance became an annual event supporting Brinsworth House and the Benevolent Fund. Over the years, new wings have been added and the late Queen Elizabeth, participated in their opening ceremonies. In 2015, the Benevolent Fund changed its name to the Royal Variety Charity.

Quinn London was appointed by Brinsworth House to carry out an internal refurbishment and remodelling of the home’s residential quarters and communal spaces to modernise and improve facilities for residents. The work, which was completed over two phases, followed upgraded accommodation and added en-suite bathrooms to many of the bedrooms. All rooms were finished to a unique decor scheme provided by the client’s interior designer, this was key in keeping the same design throughout the whole house. Staff and office areas were also refurbished and modernised. A new lift shaft was constructed from the level of the existing plant rom in the basement, and a new lift installed to serve the basement as well as the 2 floors of residential space above. In the existing plant room two new boilers were installed to ensure that the increased requirements of each room having its own ensuite could be catered for.

As the home is part funded through charitable donations the importance of achieving best value was essential, and we worked closely with the Client and design team to achieve this.

The care home remained occupied throughout the construction works, which were carefully planned to minimise disruption to residents. Our CDM team also played a crucial role providing guidance and advice to minimise health and safety risks.
