Project Completion at Senate House

We’re pleased to have successfully completed the replacement of the fire detection and alarm system at the Grade II listed Senate House, delivering a project that enhances both safety and accessibility while minimising disruption to students, staff and visitors.

Quinn was appointed to develop the design and deliver a new automated fire detection and alarm system, incorporating both hard-wired and Wi-Fi technology, alongside the creation of dedicated Refuge Areas for people with mobility impairments.

The works were carefully phased across the building’s existing 79 fire detection zones, broadly aligned with individual floor levels and areas, allowing the building to remain fully operational throughout the programme. Key elements of the project included:

• Developing the Stage 2 design and specification
• Resolving complex cable routes within the existing building
• Determining fixing methods that protected the building’s distinctive Art Deco marble panels
• Delivering the works through carefully phased fire detection zones
• Installing a dedicated Wi-Fi network with UPS backup
• Completing out-of-hours works to accommodate the continued operation of the public and student library
