Homerton New Elective Care Unit
The New Elective Care Centre project involved the extension and refurbishment of Block 5 at Homerton University Hospital to deliver modern, high-quality clinical facilities.. The scheme included a vertical extension to create a new second floor, a first-floor extension, and extensive internal remodelling. The key deliverables for the project were two new Day Surgery Unit (DSU) theatres, a new Endoscopy suite, enhanced diagnostics, a 10-bed inpatient ward, and expanded staff and storage facilities.
All works were undertaken while the hospital remained fully operational, requiring careful coordination to maintain uninterrupted patient care. The project area was located directly above a secure mental health unit operated by a separate NHS Trust, requiring close collaboration to minimise disruption to vulnerable patients. In addition, works had to be carefully phased to allow the decanting and reoccupation of clinical areas, including theatres, consulting rooms, and waiting spaces, without interrupting hospital services.
- Phase 1: Refurbishment of the north wing, including new Gynaecology, GI Physiology, diagnostics spaces, and a 10-bed ward, alongside roof replacement for new plant installation
- Phases 2–3: Construction of two new operating theatres and integration with existing services
- Phases 4–5: Final refurbishment of waiting areas and support spaces
To ensure no disruption to the hospital, temporary heating and cooling systems were installed during each phase, ensuring a consistent environment for patients and staff as well as strict fire safety controls, noise management, and continuous stakeholder engagement.
The project incorporated a high-specification MEP design to meet stringent healthcare requirements such as 7 new HTM-compliant air handling units, 3 four-pipe air source heat pumps providing low-carbon heating and cooling, a new rooftop plantroom housing all major plant and a full BMS integration for centralised control and monitoring. Low-noise equipment and external louvres were carefully selected to minimise impact on surrounding wards and the local environment.
The New Elective Care Centre successfully increases surgical and diagnostic capacity while enhancing patient experience and staff facilities. Delivered within a complex, live healthcare environment, the project demonstrates a focus on communication, collaboration, and technical delivery.
