The project at Redwood College was a full Design and Build contract comprising of providing a new permanent building for the tuition of vocational courses in carpentry, plumbing, bicycle maintenance and repair, IT skills and hair and beauty.
The building was constructed on the same site as the current temporary buildings the college was using, however one was removed to allow the new building to be constructed and another reduced when the new building had been completed and occupied. The other buildings were retained on site to keep the teaching facility in operation whilst the new building was constructed.
Being constructed alongside the busy A40 presented challenges to the design team for ventilation and noise control, however these were overcome along with the maintenance and extension of the existing services into the new building ready for occupation.
The steel frame construction was clad in Rockwool Rockclad Durable Board, a Euroclad metal vaulted roof was constructed over the two-storey section of the project and a single ply finish added to the single storey section.
Internal finishes included resin flooring to the workshop area and feature walls in the reception and salon areas to add a focus point.
