Healthcare Projects

King's College Hospital PET Scanner

CLIENT: Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
VALUE: £645k
DATE: May 12 – Aug 13

The aim of the project was to provide the Hospital with additional new Pet CT scanning facilities to meet their growing demand for the service.

The Project consisted of builders work and M&E refurbishment & new installations including ventilation, cooling, power (via a live corridor in the radiology department) and medical gasses. Refurbishment and renewal of floors, walls and ceiling finishes was also undertaken in works areas and adjacent locations. The Scanner room was located on the lower ground floor (basement floor) of the building. The works also involved provision of new services to support the medical equipment including mechanical services, medical gasses and new electrical supplies to be fed mains distribution points outside the works areas within the basement area. A lead lined wall construction, to shield against radiation, was provided to the scanner, examination room & adjacent patient rooms, some walls consisting of up to 25mm thick brick chevrons, with a total of over 55tonne lead installed in total. Following the testing the room was handed over to GE Healthcare for the installation of the new equipment.

The works were challenging as the project was located within a live working hospital, with an existing and ‘live’ scanner operating in the adjacent works area and a ‘live’ A&E department operating on the ground floor level. This necessitated a high level of communication regarding the works sequence, in particular noisy works, vibrations, access and safety considering the staff on the project and also for the hospital staff and patients. The adjacent live scanner presented challenges to ensure no staff were either exposed to risk and also the works had to be carefully scheduled to eliminate disruption to the on-going scanning service, staff and patients. Amongst an extensive list of processes to eliminate disruption were Hygienic partitioning, air quality monitoring and extensive out of hours works were successfully utilised and ensured that throughout the project the live Hospital activities were not compromised at any stage. These processes were also used to mitigate any effect on the live A&E department above. A key to achieving success was also through Quinn London regular communication with the Hospital & estates department and hospital staff onsite.

Logistics challenges were encountered due to the project location. All materials, labour (in and out) and the Pet CT delivery was live hospital environment. This presented risks of contamination, exposure of live hospital to open environment. This was again managed by a series of decontamination and protection processes implemented for the staff of both QLL and the Hospital, and also the patients, with carefully planned works and deliveries and liaison with hospital estates and departments. Quinn London site access was also restricted Limited availability of compound area to provide the necessary welfare, storage & delivery area, noting the requirement to ensure adjacent hospital service access for deliveries and ambulances etc., were not restricted required careful planning, management & communication.
