The St Albans Civic Society held its annual awards evening on October 14th 2014. The awards examines projects such as interesting developments/projects which have contributed to the life and image of the City.
From 30 nominations the awards group commended 4 projects with one outright winner. Of the commended projects our work with HFP Architects on St Columba’s college was praised. The panel were impressed with how the extension to the building had managed to radically change its character and appearance, transforming what was a tired and dated building into a fresh enlivened development with a contemporary appearance and improved environmental credentials.
The development optimised and improved existing spaces, even though the development was largely limited to the original foot print. Further refurbishments were also made to the existing hall and extension and modernisation of the welcoming foyer.
The panel were particularly impressed with the “ingenious engineering” involving the excavation of the void below the hall. This was carried out whilst keeping the building standing and the school operational during construction. Providing valuable additional space, which was vital given the imposed limitations.
We would like to thanks St Albans Civic Society for their recognition of this project.
