Works
New extension and refurbishment of a Grade II listed building for residential and teaching facilities for vulnerable adolescents.

The existing building was completely refurbished, the walls being stripped back to the bare brickwork, the floors were taken out and renewed at ground, first and second floor levels, together with the introduction of steel beams to widen the spans within the rooms. The roof of the building that consisted of a zinc dome was lifted off by a crane, in order to be refurbished. Whilst the dome was removed a reinforced concrete ring beam was cast at room level to support the weight of the dome when it was reinstated. The external brick and stone façade of the building was repaired and cleaned down, prior to the stonework bands being painted. The existing windows were removed and replaced with new double glazed sliding sash windows to match the former existing windows of the listed building.

The new two story building of traditional masonry construction clad with Larch together with curtain walling offering a light spacious feel to the internal areas.
The flat roof construction was a warm roof with a single ply membrane manufactured by Bauder, on timber joists, again steels were used to widen the spans providing large rooms.
The Building Management System was designed to optimise the use of energy and the Zumtobel lighting throughout the new build was installed with photosensitive switching.
Wood was used right through the building, within the floors and walls to create the impression of relaxation and tranquillity, offering an ideal educational environment for the children.
