Works
Refurbishment of Victorian Grade II listed building to create a 53 bedroom hostel for the homeless: In order to undertake the refurbishment of this listed building we found that forward planning was imperative in order to foresee problems with internal and external works. Problem solving was essential on this job to achieve Grade II compliance without compromising the client’s needs.

Our architect took the following into account when meeting with English Heritage and Camden’s conservation officer in completing the design features:

  • Exposed carved, ornate timber roof trusses;
  • Archive brick windows were cleaned and left exposed;
  • Existing ornate brickwork and stonework in the ground floor reception area was restored and returned to near original condition;
  • Existing timber casement windows were thoroughly overhauled and re-decorated

The existing oak floor was taken up throughout the building and was re-used in the ground floor reception areas. The new entrance area and new build rear extension was constructed to match as closely as possible to the existing original brick and stonework and internally the above features, including timber windows and oak flooring, were incorporated into the design materials and approved by the local authority.
